SILSDEN joint managers Ryan Haigh and Danny Bolton are optimistic as their side gets underway in the North West Counties League Premier Division at home to Maine Road on Saturday.

Hopes are high that the Cobbydalers can build on their encouraging tenth place finish last season.

And Silsden start the campaign against a side who they traditionally do well against, having won last season's corresponding fixture against the Manchester side 2-0.

Haigh said: “It all starts on Saturday and we'll be looking to start with three points. I don't think Danny and I are the only management team throughout the divisions eagerly awaiting the start of the season.

“Pre-season games have given us a chance to try new ideas, integrate new signings and build the camaraderie in the dressing room – that 'up and at em' mentality that is essential at any club.

“That's not done in six weeks but we are building a good bond and that will be tested throughout the season.

“Nothing compares to league games, the buzz of excitement among the staff and fans and the competitive spirit that will come over the next nine months.”

Retaining the services of captain Joe Mitchell and top scorer Craig Nicholls, despite interest from rival clubs, could prove crucial to the Cobbydalers’ chances this season.

And Haigh believes keeping the heart of the team which played last season together is important.

He said: “A major plus for us was the early commitment from captain Joe Mitchell and our star striker Craig Nicholls, who were both coveted by other clubs. They have both bought into our vision and seen the progression the club made last season.

“We have kept the nucleus of the lads who served us well last season, many of whom have come through the club ranks and have gained another year of experience.”

Bolton added: “The pre-season games gave us a good opportunity to fit in the new boys.

“We have improved steadily, from our opening game, when we lost to the Fleetwood Academy full-timers, to our victory over Bamber Bridge.

“We have a blend of youth and experience and I am really pleased that the experienced Kevin Ryan is now fully settled in the area. He is a great role model for the youngsters for whom this will be a big step up.”
