Barnoldswick Town 0 Colne 5

TOWN'S participation in this season's FA Cup proved to be brief as they were well beaten by their close rivals at a sunny

Silentnight Stadium.

A crowd of 333 watched a game that was given added spice by the presence in the visitors' team of four former Barlick players, while the home line-up had four men who had previously played for Colne.

Once again Town fielded a changed side which included losing goalkeeper Alex Palffy at the 11th hour so Jordan Gidley came in. Skipper Arley Barnes and Matthew Kershaw were also missing from the squad.

The first real chance came after ten minutes when Danny Boyle was slipped through on the Town goal but Gidley came quickly off his line to block his shot.

Town responded immediately with Mark Threlfall having a shot tipped over the bar by Colne keeper Chris Thompson.

Colne were growing in confidence and were causing all sorts of problems for the hard-pressed Town defence as they forced a succession of corners.

Desperate defending prevented Ben Hoskin from scoring while Colne skipper Simon Nangle was inches away from connecting with a Jason Hart cross.

It wasn't all one-way traffic as Jon Beckwith and Threlfall combined to set up a chance for Jack Tinning who shot just over the bar.

Striker Joe Gaughan made his presence felt as he played the ball deep to Carl Ellerton whose attempted shot was blocked by Thompson.

Colne finally broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Ellerton was unable to clear a testing cross from Hart and Hoskin slammed the ball past Gidley.

Town were still recovering from the blow when a Spencer Jordan cross was headed home from close range in by Hoskin just before the half-time whistle.

The match was as good as won for Colne in the 47th minute when Boyle set up Jordan for an easy goal from about six yards out.

For the rest of the match it was just a matter of how big the final score would be. Kenneth Taylor hit the Town crossbar, and Gidley making a great save from Hart at point-blank range.

Jordan scored Colne’s fourth after 68 minutes, tapping in from close range past Gidley.

Town had no answer to the quick Colne raids and it was no surprise when substitute Sakeel Abdullah went past Gidley before slipping the ball into the empty net.

Gidley had to be on his toes as he made great saves from first Hart then Jordan as the game came to a close.

Town were given a footballing lesson from Colne who set standards that Town should aspire to.
