Harrogate Town 6 Barnoldswick Town 1

NATIONAL League North outfit Harrogate Town proved too strong for Barnoldswick in their West Riding County Cup quarter-final tie on Tuesday night.

Harrogate are three leagues higher in the soccer pyramid than the North West Counties League outfit outfit and it showed.

The home side had a good chance to go ahead after 13 minutes but Jordan Thewlis and Dominic Knowles seemed to get in each others way as they went for Jack Emmett's cross and John Beckwith was able to clear off the line.

The visitors then shot themselves in the foot. Scott Moore decided to pass back to Jordan Gidley rather than clear. The ball went to Gidley’s wrong foot and was ballooned up in the air and fell to Knowles who cracked a shot onto the net from the edge of the area.

The visitors hit back after 18 minutes when Beckwith prodded the ball home after Harrogate keeper Peter Crook failed to deal effectively with a Mark Threlfall header.

Having got on level terms, Barnoldswick were made to pay for another costly error. Arley Barnes' attempted header back to Gidley fell short and Emmett pounced to score.

After that it was all Harrogate with shots by Andy Gascoigne, Thewlis and Andy McWilliams being saved by Gidley.

Harrogate extended their lead in the 36th minute when Carl Ellerton brought Emmett down inside the penalty area and Knowles stepped up to send Gidley the wrong way.

Harrogate continued to press on both flanks and it paid off a minute before half-time with a slick attack leading to a goal by Gascoigne.

The second half began with the home team once again showing their credentials after two minutes, Moore having to clear a cross off the line.

But four minutes into the half, Harrogate were awarded another penalty which Gascoigne slotted home.

The visitor’s best chance of the half came on the hour. Thompson was put through on goal but Crook came off his line and saved. Harrogate swept immediately to the other end and Gidley had to dive to keep out another Knowles shot.

Harrogate rounded off their victory in the 83rd minute when full back Lewis Turner cracked a great shot into the net from a 25-yard free kick.
