FA Vase second qualifying round: Silsden AFC 3 Hall Road Rangers 4

SILSDEN were on the wrong end of a classic cup tie, which went to extra-time, involved seven goals, end-to-end play, a host of missed chances and some great saves.

The Cobbydalers' player-manager James Gill was disappointed, saying: “We created enough chances but we didn’t use our heads at times.

"Each equaliser was soon followed by the visitors regaining the lead. We have a long injury list but the lads worked hard. We just need to defend better as a compact unit."

Silsden suffered a blow in the warm-up when Will Storrie pulled up, being replaced by Leon Smith, who was denied a goal in the first minute by a sharp save from Adam Stevens.

Eventually the Hull-based visitors settled, and it needed Josh McNulty to clear Dane Mortimer's header off the line.

Scott Phillips should have given the visitors the lead when he charged down a clearance from Callum Jakovlevs but his weak shot was easily gathered by the home keeper.

Danny Norton's controlled volley then hit a post, and the pressure eventually told when Chris Spinks ran onto to deft pass from Phillips in the 37th minute to chip the ball over the advancing Jakovlevs.

He then denied the visitors a second in the final minute of the half with a superb save from Tom Bennett.

Just before the break, Danny Forrest replaced Nicky McNally for Silsden and, two minutes into the second half, they equalised when Tom Coulson flicked home a free-kick.

Unfortunately, the visitors regained the lead a minute later when Spinks followed up a rebound from his own shot to fire in from close range.

Silsden searched for another equaliser, with Gill going close with a header, and neat interplay between Smith and Josh Eastwood leading to a golden chance for Ross Wilson a yard out, but the new man couldn’t make clean contact.

Both goalkeepers made further saves with their feet, but after Forrest had a penalty claim turned down in the 80th minute, the Cobbydalers equalised three minutes later via Chris Wademan after the referee played a good advantage.

Extra-time followed, and three minutes into it Norton curled the ball beyond Jakovlevs to make it 3-2.

Stevens saved at full stretch from Wademan but Forrest netted Silsden's third.

However, yet again they couldn't make parity stick and Gill tripped Phillips, who buried the spot-kick.

Substitute Tom Henderson then went agonisingly close to making it 4-4 but the spoils went to the visitors.

Silsden head to Chadderton tonight in the league and entertain current table-toppers City of Liverpool on Saturday.
