Coming on loan initially until January, King comes in as a replacement for Jordan Gidley, who has joined Bootle after impressing them in last season's Macron Cup semi-final.

Craig, who knows Burnley goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson, added: “I’m sure the question of a goalkeeper has been on everyone’s mind most of the close season.

"I have not been as concerned as I have been working on this deal most of the summer.

"Connor was an England under-16s schoolboy international and Burnley see a loan move as the next step in his development.

"It goes without saying he comes with fantastic pedigree and both the club and I feel proud and honoured to be trusted with this vital stage in his development.

"I couldn’t be happier with this signing. I spoke to Connor in the week and he’s excited to get started. I’m looking forward to working with him and watching him develop at our club.”

King's arrival completes Town's summer recruitment, with Craig having retained most of last season's squad and added striker Danny Boyle, winger Joel Melia and defender Jack Overson.

The Barlick boss is now looking forward to their pre-season campaign, which started with a run-out against neighbours Rolls on Tuesday.

Craig said: "We've a good foundation of fitness, training three times a week for a good month, so we've got lots of sessions in the bank. We're looking sharp and fit."

Town's game against Burnley under-23s on Saturday has been cancelled, meaning their next action is on Tuesday (7.45pm) at home to Evo-Stik League Division One North Skelmersdale.
