Sunday saw the Kendal Winter League presentation at the People’s Hall Sedbergh, It followed a race round the Howgills. The league consists of a series of races held from the start of January through to April and is well supported. The senior men’s championship was won last year by Wharfedale’s Sam Watson but he did not defend his title.

Ingleton’s Paul Lambert was Wharfedale Harriers highest counter in tenth place.

He was also the fourth V40 in the championship which is no mean feat.

Two Settle Harriers Brian Kennedy and Andy Evans finished fourth and sixth in the V50s but their achievement were eclipsed by Andy’s wife Carol.

She won both the V50 and senior ladies titles which considering the amount of serious competition, was an outstanding result for her.

Wharfedale’s Kirsty Hall was a worthy fourth and Hellifield’s Lynn Whittaker finished 11th and second lady in the V50 category.

Moving up a level, Cross Hills postman Barry Scholes – who is also a Wharfedaler – spent most of last year side lined due to injury.

One of his aims this year was to get back competing and hopefully lift the V60 title.

This now stands on his mantelpiece after a successful winter campaign. His club-mate Hellifield’s Trevor Metcalfe finished third V60 in this highly-competitive age group.

The juniors brought more success to our local clubs.

Wharfedale Harrier Ellie Lambert from Ingleton won the under-17 girls’ title with maximum points from five wins. Settle’s Grace Jeffrey finished third.

The Under-14 age group saw Wharfedale’s Thomas Nelson share second place – only two points behind the winner.

Two of his fellow club runners got top ten positions – Josh Newbold was seventh and Robert Lambert ninth. Both are from Ingleton.

Ilkley Harrier Euan Brennan took the under-12 title with maximum points from his races.

Keighley & Craven’s Eric Beaumont’s fifth place was a reward for a lot of effort.

The BOFRA season starts at Sedbergh Gala next month; it could be a very interesting season.
