The sun didn’t shine at Arncliffe Gala on Saturday but Appletrewick’s Ted Mason found conditions to his liking as he romped to victory.

The defending BOFRA champion honed his climbing ability speed and agility across limestone terrain and he must have felt at home in the popular race.

The course involves just 499 feet of climbing and is less than two miles long.

Essentially it is a mad dash for the runners and it was no surprise to see the Wharfedale Harriers runner finish first in 10min 47sec, well ahead of second-placed Ian Holmes of Bingley Harriers..

It was a good day for Silsden’s Jonny Bradshaw who who was the first under-23 finisher in an excellent fourth place.

Two of his Wharfedale counterparts featured in the top ten – Marc Sennet was sixth and another under-23 runner Sam Haggar came in ninth in a strong field.

The first V50 runner was Burnsall’s Jim Stockdale and Cross Hills postie Barry Scholes was the first v60 runner.

Keighley & Craven’s Rosie Hellawell nailed her first BOFRA’s championship win in style. As well as being the first woman to finish she was halfway out of all the senior runners.

Wharfedale Harriers had two more runners in the prizes. Hellifield’s Lynn Whittaker was first v45 and fourth lady home with Ingleton’s Sharon Newbold fifth.

The under-17 BOFRA championship this year has seen some tremendous battles between Hyndburn’s Jacob Boyle and Wharfedale’s Harry Muir.

Arncliffe witnessed another great contest with Boyle just beating Muir who put in a strong sprint finish.

His clubmate John Lockwood was fourth while another Harrier, Ingleton’s Ellie Lambert, was first girl and eighth overall.

The under-14 race saw Joshua Boyle make it a family double on the day with Wharfe- dale’s Thomas Nelson just six seconds adrift.

Bingley Harrier Matthew Merrick was their highest counter in fourth place.

His sister Victoria held off the fast-finishing Helm runner Imogen Burrow to take the girls’ race. Wharfedale’s Shona Hastings took third place.

Kendal’s Frazer Sproul has dominated the under-12 age group this year and he led from the start to finish well up on Pennine runner Lucas Parker.

The Wharfedale Harriers trio of Logan Hargreaves Madhas, Ciaren Crabtree and Jack Muir were third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Keighley & Craven’s Katie Atkinson ran impressively and was the first girl home.

Keighley & Craven have produced some brilliant fell runners over the years and are great supporters of BOFRA events at all levels. They had six of the first seven finishers in the under-nine race.

Evan Mills was the winner while Beth Roberts was the first girl to finish.

The 11th race in the BOFRA championship is on Bank Holiday Monday at Reeth Show in Swaledale.

Gargrave Show fell races will be taking place on show day this Saturday.

The popular races will commence from the main ring at noon with the under nines race, followed by under-12s, under-14s and under- seventeen categories. The senior runners will be the last to tackle the multi terrain race.

Entries will be accepted on the day.
