BOFRA’s version of the Burnsall Classic fell race on Sunday was run in terrible conditions with high winds and rain making what is normally a tough race a lot more hazardous.

A total of 72 runners snaked their way up the fell but a group of three had pulled away from the pursuing athletes before scampered down the steep rocky descent from the senior turn and launching themselves through the rough moorland.

They entered the finishing field together but Leeds City’s Jack Simpson hung on firmly to his lead whilst Calder Valley’s Shaun Godsman held off a fast finishing Ted Mason.

Three seconds parted the trio which proves what this meant to them.

For Wharfedale Harriers’ Ted Mason it probably means that he will not retain the BOFRA championship trophy he won last year.

Godsman is favourite to take the crown.

On the day five more Wharfedale Harriers finished in the top ten.

Fred Bosomworth came back fourth just ahead of Cobbydaler Jonny Brad- shaw who was the first under-23 man.

Sixth was Hellifield’s Jimmy Craig and Paul Carman came home in seventh, six seconds in front of the first v45 Ingleton’s Paul Lambert.

Wharfedale’s Kirsty Hall was first lady with Jean Powell in second. She was also the first v45. Keighley & Craven’s Rosie Hellawell was the first under-23 woman and was not far behind in third.

The under-17 race had a wide range of club runners but it was two Wharfedaler’s who won their categories by a wide margin.

Harry Muir was over half a minute up on his rivals whilst Ingleton’s Ellie Lam- bert had nearly a minute advantage on the next under-17 girl.

The under-14 race saw Wharfedale’s Thomas Nel- son take the race by the scruff of the neck as he led the 22 runners from the start.

He put in a tremendous effort to keep the in-form runner James Lund behind him. Their first and second placings were hard earned.

The first girl was Victoria Merrick of Bingley Harriers who came back well clear of the other girls.

Wharfedale’s Logan Har- greaves Madhas excelled in the wet and windy conditions coming home first in the under-12 race.

Keighley & Craven’s Katie Atkinson showed not only the girls the way home but came second overall in the 38-runner field.

Settle Harriers’ Thomas Marshall and Sebastian Segger Staveley were second and third in the boys’ race Keighley & Craven juniors Evan Mills and Beth Roberts have dominated the under-nines this season.

Beth extended her winning run but Evan was just pipped by Ilkley Harrier Lewis Carr who came home first just one second ahead.

The highest counters for Wharfedale were George Milner third boy while Rebecca Kerman had a great run to finish as the second girl.

With only two races left in the championship Sunday’s run from Embsay could alter some championship places.
