THERE were some new faces claiming top prizes at this week's Embsay Fell Race as 64 intrepid senior runners set off on the "very runnable" route over and round Embsay Crag.

Harrogate's Duncan Birtwhistle made the most of the almost perfect running weather to storm home in 20 mins 17 seconds. The second man home was Skipton's Lee Athersmith 21 seconds later and third man to finish was Ilkley Harriers' Dan Wilkinson.

First lady home was Keighley & Craven's Pippa Barrett in 26.35 followed by Bingley Harriers' Lesley Watson (26.37) and Settle Harriers' Judith Marshall.

The winner of the Under-17 race was more predictable as Wharfedale Harriers' Thomas Nelson continued his winning streak to romp home in 17.33, nine seconds ahead of Keighley & Craven's Jimmy Lund.

Lund's performance is doubly impressive as he won both an Aquathlon and Swimming Gala race the previous day. Bingley Harriers' Matthew Merrick was third. He had represented England in the Home British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championship the previous day.
