FOLLOWING the success of the one mile handicap at last year’s event, the 100 metres sprint has now been re-introduced to the sporting attractions at this year’s Kilnsey Show which takes place on Tuesday, August 30.
Having been a popular part of the sports for almost a century, the track events were misguidedly deleted from the programme a decade ago, but now an event which was traditionally a magnet for local footballers and rugby players, will be returned to its former glory.
The last winner of the Kilnsey sprint ten years ago – as our picture shows – was the Skipton footballer and athlete – Richard Barrett (Number 1) who just edged out Chris Simpson who himself more latterly had been a key figure in the Craven League and Craven Cup winning Skipton LMS teams.
Meanwhile third place in last staging of the Kilnsey sprint was another well-known personality in the district's sporting circles – namely the former professional boxing star, John Daly, who is now coach at Keighley Amateur Boxing Club.
Hopefully mention of these spirited competitors will inspire some of their younger contemporaries to test their speedy credentials in front of a traditionally appreciative and huge crowd.
Entry details for all the Kilnsey foot racing events are available from Mick Hawkins 01756 770255, Ted Mason 01756 720392 or Roger Ingham 01756 790408 / 07773 302891.
