TED Mason held off some stiff competition to win the Eshton Moor Fell Race.

The recent wet weather meant conditions were slippery on the 5.5 mile course. The free range cattle and sheep proved to be mobile obstacles as well as providing a good Yorkshire dose of fresh manure to squelch along with the mud.

Mason used all of his experience to win the senior men's race in 33min 03sec from Barlick Fell Runners' Michael Malyon (33.25). Mason's Wharfedale Harriers colleague Harry Coates (33.58) was third.

The ladies race was a battle between two of Barlick’s best ladies in the form of Rachel Villiers and Sarah Bell.

Bell took the victory in 40.12 from Villiers (40.56) and Nid Valley’s Carol Morgan (42.16).

Keighley and Craven’s Eric Beaumont held the halfway lad in the under-17 race with a trio of Wharfedale Harriers’ in his wake.

However, navigation errors and livestock induced detours shuffled the order so that the race was won by Wharfedale’s Jack Muir (29.39) from clubmate William Thompson (29.54) and Beaumont in third (30.12).

The girls seemed to deal more easily with the obstacles with Bingley Harriers’ Emily Field winning in 31.44 from the Wharfedale duo of Emily Jones (35.22) and Alana Willis (52.30).

Wharfedale’s Alexander Thompson (9.59) won the under-14 boys race from Keighley’s Sam Headley (10.26) and Barlick’s Jack Villiers (10.47).

The first girl was Wharfedale’s Alice Jones (10.52) who romped home in fourth place overall, from Ilkley Harriers’ Bernadette Raven (11.15) and Wharfedale’s Amelie Lane (13.55).

Barlick’s Jacob Reeday (8.32) came home first in the under-12 race from Wharfedale’s Tom Hooper (8.56) and Barlick’s Logan McCredie (9.07). Keighley’s Hannah Robinson (8.43) won the girls race from Otley’s Charlotte Rawstron (8.46) and Ilkley Harriers’ Hatti Bishop (9.23).

The first under-nine across the line was Jack Sanderson of Settle Harriers (3.49) ahead of Oliver Holt (3.56) and Trawden’s Charlie Ellison (4.16). The girls’ podium was an exclusively Barlick affair as Evie Scott won in 4.26 in a split-second sprint finish from Chloe Boothman (4.26) and Bella McCredie (4.50)
