Jimmy Lund added another title to his glittering collection as he won the under-12 race in the Northern Schools Cross Country Championships.

His victory crowned a great day for Ermysted’s Grammar School at Stockport.

Four more athletes from the Skipton school secured top-ten finishes while their five teams secured one second, a third and three fourth place positions in their respective age groups.

That enabled them to finish third school overall in the combined team event, while they lifted the Trefoil Trophy for the third time for the combined under-12, under-13 and under-14 team scores.

Team-mates Lund and Charlie Lowrie were expected to do well in the under-12 race.

They set off hard and soon were heading the field. After the downhill section Lund had a ten-yard lead with Lowrie about the same distance ahead of third, The race was decided when the runners returned uphill.

Lund worked hard and pulled well clear to win by about half a minute. Lowrie, who had been suffering from a cold all week, found breathing difficult.

He stuck to his task to come fourth. Alex Blake (15th) and Harry Schofield (34th) both ran well to enable the team to come third, three points behind the runners-up. Non-scorers Alfie Spain and Owen Norton also ran well.

The under-13 team was also fourth with another low score of 52 points.

Matthew Thompson was their top finisher in sixth place while Ben Archer was seventh, Ben Speak (18th) and Matthew Jackson (21st). Unfortunately, Luke Thompson dropped back down the field and was 24th. The other non-scorers for Ermysted’s were Danny Pow (29th) and Calum O’Dowd (36th). The under-14 team ran well as a unit to secure runners-up spot.

Rob Thompson was sixth, while Jack Paul, Eddie Muirhead and Max Nicoll were 13th, 14th and 15th respectively.

Their efforts enabled Ermysted’s to win the Trefoil Trophy for the best combined totals for the under-12, under-13 and under-14 teams.

The under-16s were shorn of a number of their regular runners due to injuries, a party and a boxing bout, but still came fourth.

Adam Sayedi came 16th, with Harry Whyte (22nd), Lawrence Wildman (30th) and Rob Golson (31st). The seniors were promising as they came back in procession in places 15th to 18th thanks to George Meehan, Will Nottidge, captain Sam Westcott and Tom Kennedy. That earned them fourth place.
