The popular Gargrave Show fell race will take place on Saturday The event encourages runners of all ages and abilities and local athletes are particularly encouraged to take part.

There are cash prizes for the first local male and female in each category.

In addition the D Mckell trophy is awarded to the highest placed local male from any of the five age categories and a new trophy kindly donated by the Weatherill family.

The Jack Weatherill trophy will be awarded to the highest-placed female competitor from any of the five age categories.

Local rules apply to runners from Gargrave, Coniston Cold, Bell Busk, Otterburn, Bank Newton, Broughton, Eshton, Winterburn, Flasby and Stirton with Thorlby.

Over the years competitiors from all over Great Britain and beyond have taken part.

Newly-crowned Olympic triathlon gold medal winner Alistair Brownlee won the under-17s race in 2002.

The age group categories are under-nines, under-12s, under-14s, under-17s and seniors.

The senior event is described as one of the best multi terrain races in the North of England, taking in a river crossing, meadowland, stubble, pasture land, woodland, open moorland and culminating in a steep climb to the pinnacle of Sharphaw.

The course covers a distance of approximately 3.3 miles with an ascent of 274 metres.

The course record of 21:21 was set by Rob Hope of Pudsey in 1999.

Entries are taken from 11.30am adjacent to the main ring. The first race, the under-nines, will leave the main ring at noon.

It is estimated the senior race will start around 12.45pm and that will be the main attractiuon.
No entry fee is charged for the race but admission to the show will be charged at the gate for all of the competitors.
