Cricket was hit for six by torrential rain on Saturday – but three games in Wharfedale managed to get some play.

There was one result too with Gargrave beating the eight-men of Cowling 2nds by three wickets in Division Five of the Mewies Solicitors Craven League on a day when there were widespread abandonments across Yorkshire.

But Settle’s Houldsworth Solicitors Ribblesdale League Senior Division game with Euxton and Upper Wharfedale’s Aire-Wharfe Division Two match with Bolton Villas were unable to reach a conclusion after getting under way.

The weather also struck again on Sunday when the Ribblesdale League derby between Barnoldswick and Earby was washed out.

It was a cruel blow for Earby who lost the leadership to champions Clitheroe who managed to win their game.

It wasn’t just league fixtures that felt the brunt of the weather. The entire second round programme in the Wynn Cup was washed away. All of the ties, with the exception of Foulridge against Sutton will be played this Sunday.

It wasn’t just the Craven League officials that had to reschedule games. The Ribblesdale League have announced that they will find a new date for all Saturday’s matches to be replayed.

It means that the performances in Settle’s game will be erased from the records. When the rain finally curtailed their match they were in a strong position at161-3 with their professional Imran Khalid unbeaten on 82.

Wharfedale rugby player Tom Davidson had also made a useful 43 which will now be erased from the records.

Many Aire-Wharfe observers were somewhat surprised that the only play was at Wood Lane – usually one of the league’s wet spots.

All games in the Aire-Wharfe where washed out, with no play. However Upper Wharfedale managed to get a start at Wood Lane versus Bolton Villas.

The game was reduced to 28 overs and the Dalesmen lost the toss and where asked to bat.

In the gloom openers Isaac Beck and Dave Eggleton started well and at a rain break the home side had reached a valuable batting point at 128-2. However the rains came and that was the end of that.

Gargrave weren’t to be denied though. They bowled out Cowling II for 78 as Richard Saxby took 3-29 and Ben Wood (3-14). In reply the home side struggled to 82-7.
