SKIPTON’S Division Two promotion hopes suffered a setback when a disappointing batting performance led to disappointing seven-wicket defeat at Green Lane.

The home side went into the match still smarting from having all their previous 74 points removed by the Aire-Wharfe League for playing an ineligible player.

And Green Lane, who have been reduced from promotion chasers to a side having to haul themselves off the bottom of the table, opened their points account for the second time with a welcome 15-point haul.

Skipton batted first to the accompaniment of music from the fairground on adjoining land. As the 1980s numbers and Elvis Presley classics were belted out so the Skipton wickets tumbled.

It was a case of Heartbreak Hotel as they plunged to 121 as Michael Slater (5-43) exploited the helpful bowling conditions.

A half-century ninth-wicket stand of 43 between Iqbal Khan (30) and Luke Facey (29no) gave the total a more respectable look than appeared likely when they came together at 59-8.

Skipton needed to take early wickets to have any hope of defending their modest total.

The dangerous Waleem Akhtar was bowled by debutant Aqeel Khan for 13 and two more quick wickets, including that of Skipton old boy Azhar Mahmood, left Green Lane precariously placed on 24-3.

Aussie Tony Cornwell didn't let the situation trouble him. He played a match-winning knock from number four, hitting a chanceless 65 as he saw Green Lane home without the loss of further wickets.

Steeton were made to pay for a disappointing batting display as they went down to a 44-run defeat in their Division One match against North Leeds at Summerhill Lane.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. They made steady progress to a total of 194-7 in their 50 overs with Neil Spragg (4-43) proving to be the best of the Steeton bowlers.

Steeton needed to make a good start but lost both openers in the seventh over with 29 runs on the board. David Robinson hit four boundaries as he scored 17, but Steeton were further reduced to 62-4 in the 27th over.

The required rate was rising to almost six runs per over as Neil Spragg (41) and James Freebury (34) added 56 runs for the fifth wicket.

Spragg top-scored with 41 from 77 deliveries with six boundaries; and Freebury scored 34 runs from 41balls.

Despite their efforts, the required rate continued to rise and Steeton’s late wickets were wasted trying to force the pace.

Tom Stead chipped in with 11 runs, but Steeton were all out for 150 in 46.2 overs.

Upper Wharfedale looked to have a good chance of another welcome victory when they bowled out Olicanian for 128 in Division Three.

Overseas player Caleb Grant was again among the wickets with 5-38 for Upper Wharfedale, but his side's batsmen were unable to capitalise on his good work.

Despite a battling 45 not out from Jake Starkey and 31 from Callum Lockett, Upper Wharfedale were dismissed for 110.

Silsden added to a miserable day for the Craven clubs when they were skittled out for 65 by Bolton Villas to lose by six wickets. Defiant opener Tim Sugden was ninth man out with 22.

Addingham kept hot on the heels of Division Three leaders New Rover with a 159-run win over Bardsey. JH Johnson smashed 18 fours and six sixes in racing to 134 off 82 balls and enjoyed a 160 stand with Ricky Palacio (77). Tom Smallwood rounded things off with an unbeaten half century.
