SETTLE, surprise runners up in the Houldsworth Ribblesdale League last season, have turned to veteran Andrew Davidson to lead their side as they open the new season at Brooksbottom on Saturday.

Davidson was asked to take the helm when opening bowler and last season's captain Eddie Read decided to join Northern League club Morecambe.

With many their squad either playing rugby union or away at university, it was decided that Davidson was the man for the job.

This will be his 43rd season of playing at this level and he has 16 years of captaincy behind him too.

He said: "I know the strengths and weaknesses of the recruited players and feel that a young side needs guidance and leadership.

"I firmly believe in our ability to win silverware this year and I look forward to the challenge."

Barnoldswick and Earby open their season with a derby clash at Victory Park. It will be an early opportunity for the home side's new South African paceman Kyle Marshall to make his mark.

The two sides had contrasting fortunes last season. Barnoldswick were relegated from the Senior Division's Section A while Earby won promotion from Section B.

Earby, who will again have all-rounder Dave Crotty as their professional, have a new captain. Batsman Matt Haines has taken over from Richard Craddock.

Haines is looking forward to the task. He said: We are hoping to be able to bring on a couple of our young players this season and we will be hoping that Dave Crotty will be able to make telling contributions for us."
