SETTLE gave Ribblesdale Wanderers a hard time on their patch over the Bank Holiday, smashing their bowlers for ten runs an over in Friday’s 20/20 match, and hitting a club record of 298-7 in the Ribblesdale League on Saturday, eclipsing their 2013 total of 273 against Clitheroe.

Asif Fazal (41) and Tom Davidson(40), at under 30 balls each, set the tone in the 20/20, with pro Imran Khalid taking centre stage with 66 runs from 39 deliveries.

The total of 201-9 was far too much for the hosts, who crumbled to 88 all out as Khalid picked up the remarkable figures of 5-11 from four overs, backed up by two wickets for under-17 Benjamin Hulse and three catches by Brook Birley.

This was merely the prelude to a record-breaking league achievement as Settle returned to a shell-shocked Church Meadow the next day.

Wanderers inexplicably put Settle in to bat, unleashing a catalogue of top-quality performances – Tom Davidson 30 at a run a ball, Asif Fazal 40 runs, Khalid 47 from 39, John Davidson 23, Hassan Fazal 42 from 33 and youngster Hulse unbeaten on 18. However, the innings highlight was a majestic 82 from in-form William Davidson, cracking eleven fours and three sixes on his way.

The hosts put up what, in different circumstances, would be a decent score of 149 all out, but it was no contest as Khalid took 3-42, Asif Fazal 2-19 and Tom Davidson 2-25. The fielding was epitomised by outstanding catching from under-17 Simon Tarbox, a reflection of the progress of Settle’s young players under Tom Davidson’s captaincy.

Over the two days, Settle hit 499 runs from 65 overs and are now in second place in the League, so their home derby against struggling Earby this Saturday could put them top of the pile.

Sri Lankan Shashrika Pussegolla was the star performer of Barnoldswick’s 32-run win over Euxton.

He arrived at the crease with his side in trouble at 2-3 and gradually turned around the fortunes with 84 from 118 balls.

Pussegolla’s innings contained two sixes and five fours as he combated the threat of Francois Haasbroek (5-57) and helped his side post a respectable 157.

Pussegolla followed up by taking 4-25 as Barnoldswick dismissed Euxton for 125. He claimed the final wicket to secure the bonus points with two balls to spare.

Earby’s batting crumbled again as they suffered a 147-run defeat by Whalley. They lost their first six wickets with just 14 on the board and only the efforts of tailenders Sam Parry (28no), Nathan Taylforth (10) and Jason Lockley (10) spared them from greater humiliation against the bowling of Fergus Bailey (4-13) and Joshua McLean (3-22)

Whalley’s batsmen had found the going far easier when they opted to bat first. Yogesh Takawale (74) and Declan Bailey (43) helped their side to a total of 219-7. Taylforth was the pick of the Earby bowlers with 5-38.

In an all-Craven affair at Marshfield, Earby seconds took Settle’s bowlers to task to the tune of 226-6, with Adam Yates hitting 13 fours in his knock of 96. Josh Yates added 35, while Salik Khan was unbeaten on 49. John Tarbox and Josh Mullinder picked up two wickets apiece and under-15 fielder Rob Johnson excelled in the covers.

Mullinder responded in like manner, hitting 60 in an 82-run opening partnership with under-16 Adam Strickland (17). Settle continued their attack with Will Metcalfe (19) and Tarbox (25), but the batting ran out of steam at 156 all out. Martin Windle took 5-59 and Adam Yates 3-25 to round off his fine all-round day.
