THE Skipton Inter District Veterans team were soundly beaten by a strong Huddersfield side which currently tops the table.

The home team, playing at Gargrave, lost 19-9, with just three winners.

Kevin Burnett and Arnie Ripley both won 21-15 while Mick Duke just got home 21-20 but could not prevent Huddersfield securing a good away win.

The Skipton team also found the going tough at Bradley and Colne Bridge WMC where only John Parkin and Barry Turnbull secured wins.

Both secured 21-7victories but Huddersfield won 20-8 to record an overall match victory by 39 points to 17.

Latest league positions: Huddersfield 175, Bradford 160, Skipton 146, Halifax 143, Wakefield 131, Castleford 130, Leeds 118 and West Riding 117.

The next Veterans match will be in the Hickson Trophy, which is a one-day knockout involving eight teams from all over West and South Yorkshire, it will be played next Friday with Skipton and District hosting the event.

Two good qualifying rounds for the Hargreaves Ltd Summer Doubles took place last Tuesday at Silsden BC and Silsden Playing Fields.

Thirty two pairs started with eight qualifying for the final at Keighley Bowling Club on Sunday, July 13 with a 1.30pm start.

The qualifiers were: Walter Allan and Ken Wilson (Colne Legion), Graham Reay and Ian Dewhirst (Cononley), Barry Turnbull and Alan Thornber (Silsden), Jonathan Barrett and Richard Perry (Devonshire), Derek Burgess and Carol Harrison (Lund Park), Viv Abell and Mick Bastow (Craven), Jim Akrigg and Daryl Gore (Broughton Road), Kevin Burnett and Michael Claxton (Devonshire).

The Yorkshire Ladies Inter District sides met in Leeds for their one-day district competition.

Skipton and District Ladies played their qualifying group at Meanwood Park where they had two close matches against Castleford and West Riding as they won their group and progressed to the semi-finals.

Their opponents were Aire and Wharfedale at North Leeds and they recorded a resounding win.

The final at Whitkirk proved to be a different proposition as they met old rivals Huddersfield.

The Huddersfield side proved to be to good for Skipton having a comfortable win.

Joanne Ellis and Kath Whitaker had the consolation of going through the day unbeaten.

The Yorkshire County EE Cockcroft Handicap final took place at Thornhill Cricket and Bowling Club.

Skipton's two qualifiers were the Gargrave pair Martyn Cox and Steve Longley.

Cox found the going tough against R Mallinson from Crosland Moor trailing 15-5, but he recovered well to level 16-16.

That was as good as it got for him as his opponent responded to win 21-16.

Steve Longley met D Thomas from Glasshoughton Welfare and found the green to his liking as he progressed with 21-13 win.

That earned him a tie against one of the favourites, Yorkshire player Josh Mordue from Brighouse Sports.

Longley produced an excellent performance to win 21-15 and that secured him a semi-final against S Thompson from Glasshoughton Welfare.

Longley put up a good show but could not produce the goods this time as he went out 21-13. Thompson lost in the final to A. Tattersley from Lower Hopton.

The two local sides in the Yorkshire Cup had tough matches at the weekend. Broughton Road met Netherton Cons A at Kingston B C, while Crossroads travelled to Rothwell BC to take on Thongsbridge.

Crossroads put up a good performance in a tight match against a side tipped to be in contention for the trophy.

They started well with Richard Hargreaves winning 21-5 and skipper Peter Clark 21-16, although the good results were cancelled out with to two defeats.

The middle four games did well as Paul Berry 21-7, Karl Lockwood 21-11 and Les Foster 21-14 all won while Neil Hargreaves put up a good performance against Andy Cairns before going down 21-14.

That gave Crossroads a 25 point lead but it did not last as Thongsbridge showed thst their class runs throughout the team. The last four games all went their way as they clinched a quarter-final spot with a 200-172 victory.

Broughton Road were not in the same league as their illustrious opponents Netherton Cons A, is was a whitewash with single figure scores being the order of the day as they went down 252-131. Their best performers were Graham Perry and Richard Baker who lost 21-19 and 21-18 respectively.

Cononley progressed to the quarter-finals of the Henry Taylor Cup with a 228-185 victory over Linthwaite at Spen Victoria. Stuart Myers 21-8, Graham Sharp 21-10 and Jim Calvert 21-10 produced their best wins.

The Eric Hutchinson Cup holders Oxenhope continued their bid to retain the title with a comfortable 215-199 win over Hightown Libs at West Bradford.

Their best wins went to Tony Walton 21-6, Debbie Hosty 21-7 and Lorraine Douglas 21-13.
