HORIZON Taekwondo Academy members Ellie Bowden and Jamie Simpson-Kidd will make their England debuts in the Commonwealth Championships next month.

Cullingworth's Bowden, 13, and six-time international champion Simpson-Kidd, 12, compete in the 12-14 years cadet category in Edinburgh.

They join clubmates Kieran Young (Bradford) and Thomas Henley (Harrogate), who are taking part in the senior events, while Henley is also young enough at 17 to compete at junior level.

Horizon coach Rick Simpson said: "These are our strongest players, and we are delighted that their hard work and dedication has been recognised."

Ellie has not been defeated on home soil for over 12 months, and Simpson said: "I'm so proud that she has topped off such a successful year by representing team England, and it is going to be great for her.

"She started training when she was about four or five when I set up a club in Cullingworth and now, at 13, she has developed into one of England's strongest cadet athletes."

Simpson added: "Jamie is in a really competitive group, so to be selected is a major achievement as those who didn't get in could have easily been selected instead. Team England clearly see Jamie as a medal prospect."
