APART from a strong but mild easterly wind, conditions were quite good for the final match in this season’s inaugural Craven Summer League fished on the Long Ing length of the canal at Barnoldswick last Sunday.

All the competitors landed fish which consisted mainly of small roach and skimmers although the odd bigger fish also turned up. Perch were few and far between and those that were caught were on the small side.

Local man, Ian Parker, headed the list of winners with 1,020g (2:4:0) while league organiser, Bill Davenport, took second place with 940g (2:1:0). Other leading anglers were: 3,Simon Chenior 920g (2:0:4), 4 Andy Wharton 710g (1:9:0), 5 Andrew Thomas 650g (1:7:0) and 6 Kenny Wright 520g (1:2:4).

Final league placings adjusted to the best six results out of a maximum of seven, are as follows: 1 Rob Thornton 86pts, 2 Ernest Ramsbotham 79, 3 Simon Chenior 78, 4 Andrew Thomas 76, 5 Kenny Wright 71 and 6 Andy Wharton 70.

The next match fishing event to commence will be the Skipton Winter League which kicks off at Swine Lane, Riddlesden, on Sunday, September 6 followed by Snaygill, Skipton, two weeks later. For further particulars please phone Bill Davenport on 01756 799671 or 07581082576.

Whinnygill Reservoir is fishing well at the moment with good catches of brown trout, roach, perch and carp taking either the maggot or the worm. There have been two outstanding fish landed but unfortunately, in either case no weighing scales were available.

Alan Wade took the heaviest fish, a common carp in really good condition and estimated to weight between 2,700g and 3200g (6 to 7lb). The fish fell to double red maggot presented on a size 18 barbless hook and a 1.15kg (2.5lb) cast. With such light tackle it was quite a struggle to get the hard fighting fish in the net. Besides the carp, Alan also landed several small roach and perch plus a decent brownie or two.

The other splendid fish was caught by the young son of Michael Ickringill (no name given) and was unmistakably a roach complete with red fins. Making a judgement from a photograph of the fish, I would say that it was about 35 cm (14 inches) in length with a weight of 910g (2:0:0) plus which certainly puts it in the specimen class.
