A LULL in the wet and windy weather last Sunday finally allowed the Skipton Winter League to complete this year’s series of seven matches when they lined up on the Marina length of the canal at Barnoldswick.

This stretch is well known for the excellent sport it can produce, but last Sunday was one of its off days. This was probably due to the previous day’s very heavy rain, the overnight frost that followed it and the heavily-discoloured water on match day.

Darren Wright was the only competitor that managed to catch anything of note and his two bream on worm and caster gave him an easy win with 1,640g (3:9:12).

Bill Davenport was second with three roach on bread punch for only 250g (0:8:12) whilst Keith Brown’s four roach was enough for third spot with 130g (0:4:8).

Jason Aldis was fourth with 80g (0:2:12) and Dave Fenn, Andy Wharton and Russell Heaton all had 40g (0:1:6) to tie for fifth spot.

In the pairs event, the top three places were decided on the top three results in the individual event as their partners failed to either fish the match or catch anything.

Fourth place went to Heaton and Aldis with 120g (0:4:2), Wharton and Magner were fifth with 50g (0:1:12) and the Fenns sixth with just Dave’s weight of 40g (0:1:6).

The final league placings remained more or less the same as after the penultimate match with Darren Wright the individual champion and D & R Fenn just holding on to become the pairs champions.

The leading competitors were as follows – Individuals: 1 D Wright 144pts, 2 D Fenn 140, 3 R Heaton 131, 4 A Wharton 123, 5 J Aldis 119, and 6 W Davenport 111.

Pairs: 1 D & R Fenn 63, 2 Heaton & Aldis 62, 3 Wright & Thomas 58, 4 Wharton & Magner 49, 5 Cockshott & Ramsbotham 48, 6 Bradley & Davenport 46.

One other competition that was decided was the individual knockout which was fished between Graeme Waterfall and Simon Chenior.

As it turned out on the day, neither angler caught anything so the last match results came into play and gave the trophy to Graeme who won by 2,510g (5:8:8) to Simon’s 240g (0:8:8).

Skipton AA members should note that the annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at the Three Links Club, situated on the eastern side of the Skipton Town Hall car park and commencing at 7.45 pm.
