KEIGHLEY & CRAVEN Athletics Club struck gold in the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Lightwater Valley theme park in Ripon.
Gargrave’s Tom Barrett became Yorkshire champion with a fantastic sprint finish in the under-15 boys race. His club mate Joe Hudson, from Skipton, took bronze in the same race and, together with Ryan Watmough (20th), helped Keighley & Craven take the team gold medal.
Alice Jones, from Silsden-based Wharfedale Harriers, won bronze in the under-13 girls race. She was closely followed by Keighley & Craven’s Lilli Carr in fourth place. With Sebastienna Bairstow finishing 19th and Beth Roberts 22nd, the team collected a silver medal.
Gargrave’s Katie Atkinson (Keighley & Craven) was fourth in the under-15 girls race against strong opposition. Encouragingly, she still has a year to go in this age category. Jimmy Lund, of Keighley & Craven, was seventh in the under-17 men’s race.
Barrett, Hudson, Jones, Carr, Atkinson and Lund will go on to represent Yorkshire at the Inter Counties event at Birmingham in March.
Keighley & Craven missed out on the silver medal by one point in the under-13 boys event where
Rhys Watmough (10th), Finlay Whitehead (17th) and Will Atkinson (18th) ran well.
