JIMMY Lund and Harvey Lewis won individual titles and the junior teams retained the Trefoil Trophy on another successful day for Ermysted’s in the Northern Schools Cross Country Championships at Manchester.

Lewis, who had finished third last year, was in third place halfway round the last lap before a stunning finishing burst saw him overtake the two front runners and claim victory in the Year 8 race.

It was the first individual success by an Ermysted’s runner for three years and was followed later by victory for Lund in the Year 10/11 race.

Lund, who has been more at home on the fells since his Year 7 and Year 8 title wins, showed his quality once again.

He kept grinding away at the front and broke clear on the second lap and stretched his lead all the way to the line.

The Trefoil Trophy is awarded to the school with the lowest combined points total in the three junior age groups.

The Year 7s certainly played their part as they took the team title. Alex Thompson produced a fine run to take second place and was followed home by Will Atkinson in fourth, Jath Lee 11th, and Hamish Wills 17th, for a total of 34 points.

Ermysted’s also had a B team that finished 13th with Donacha Washington 54th, Alfie Butler 56th, Leo Walkden 57th and Toby Meynell 59th.

The Year 8 team took second place with another fine effort to finish behind QEGS Penrith who had four runners in the top ten.

Winner Lewis was well supported by Louis Hudson seventh, Arthur Peel 12th and Sebastian Seggar-Staveley 17th for a total of 37 points.

The Year 9 team were fourth in their age group after a determined effort which enabled Ermysted’s to retain the Trefoil Trophy.

Will Thompson finished tenth, Jonny Thompson 12th, Laurie Petrucci 16th, and Charles Booth 23rd for a total of 61 points.

Ermysted’s took second place in the Year 10/11 event where winner Lund was backed up by Tom Barrett fifth, Sam Jackson 14th and Ben Jackson 39th.

Cross country captain Rob Thompson made his last appearance for Ermysted’s in the senior race and came home ninth. Matt Thompson 16th, Matt Jackson 24th and George Maloney 31st helped the team to fifth place with 80 points

Katie Atkinson of Skipton Girls High School was third in the Year 9/10 race where she was closely followed by Emily Jones in seventh place and Teegan Elson eighth.

Lucy Fryers led their challenge in the Year 7/8 race in 14th place while Freya Mitchell was 15th and Amy Beanlands 16th.
