IT was a case of third time lucky for Skipton AA member Philip Mawson when he fished Embsay Reservoir last Sunday.

Twice previously this season, fish had been caught that would have beaten the association’s 25-year-old rainbow trout record but on each occasion their captors were not interested in holding the record. Mawson has stepped into the breach with a specimen that he caught last Sunday.

The rainbow weighed exactly 3,410g (7:8:0) and measured 66cm (26 inches) in length which complies with weight for length scales so the fish was in good condition.

Float fished worm tempted the big trout along with another rainbow of 655g (1:7:0) and six tiger trout. All the fish were returned to the water to fight another day.

The first blue trout has been caught in the reservoir and it looks like the honour fell to a lady, Emma Regan.

The fish was in fine condition and weighed about 680g (1:8:0). It should soon be accompanied by several more blues when it is restocked shortly.

Whinnygill Reservoir continues to fish well for brown trout and several good fish have been landed on the fly and worm.

The best in the last week fell to Michael Ickringill and tipped the scales at 2,020g (4:7:0). Michael had also been catching well on the River Aire with some good brownies and the odd grayling, all falling to the fly.

Craven Summer League competitors fished the gas works length of the canal at Silsden last Sunday and enjoyed some decent sport for once with a few good bream turning up in the top weights along with plenty of small perch, roach and skimmers.

The results were: 1 Danny Bolland 2,340g (5:12:0), 2 Joe Bolland 1,440g (3:2:12), 3 Martin Magner 1,300g (2:13:8), 4 Bill Davenport 1,210g (2:10:8), 5 Ernie Ramsbotham 1,080g (2:6:0), 6 Keith Brown 1,060g (2:5:4). After just two matches, the leading competitors are as follows: 1 Danny Bolland 45pts; 2 Dave Moffat and Graeme Waterfall 40pts and 4 Joe Bolland 38pts.

Registration for the league is now closed and the next match will be fished on the Long Ing length of the canal at Barnoldswick on Sunday, May 29.
