SILSDEN'S Barry Turnbull and Bill Cater won the Hargreaves Ltd Doubles at Broughton Road

They looked to be up against it when they trailed Andrew Tate and Chris Wilson 5-1 in the 15 up final, but recovered to lift the trophy.

Cater and Turnbull retrieved the situation with a little run to go 6-5 up before Wilson and Tate got the jack and looked to stretch the mark in the corners. Two doubles put them in from 9-6.

A bit of luck got a point and the jack for Cater and Turnbull. It proved to be the turning point as Billy Cater picked the perfect mark for himself as he then led the match-winning run.

Four top quality ends produced a run of 3-2-1-2, and that secured the trophy for Tate and Wilson.

The new champions had reached the final with a close-fought 15-13 win over Paul Kaye and Bob Jeffries.

Turnbull and Cater made a hot start with five points in two ends and led 8-3 after six.

Kaye and Jeffries hit back with seven in three ends to lead 10-8, then four to Turnbull and Cater swung it back to 12-8.

Singles to Kaye and Jeffries saw them level, but the final say went to Turnbull and Cater as they got home 15-13.

Hopes of competition sponsor Trevor Hargreaves winning his own event in partnership with his on Richard were ended in the other semi-final against Andrew Tate and Chris Wilson.

Three singles got Tate and Wilson off the mark but the Hargreaves pairing hit back over the next three ends with two doubles and a four to lead 8-3.

Tate and Wilson then found the mark and put in a tidy run to go clear at 13-9, but their lead was cut to one by a three by their opponents.

A two at the next end took Tate and Wilson into the final 15-12.
