SKIPTON Swimming Club's Ned Sharp helped Yorkshire to a historic victory over rivals Lancashire in the National County Teams Championships at Sheffield's Ponds Forge.

The competition attracted the finest swimmers from across the country and saw Yorkshire beat their Roses rivals for the first time in 14 years.

Ned, aged 13, was proud to be selected to compete in three events – 100-metre free individual race, the 50-metre free leg of the 200-metre medley relay and 50-metre free in the mixed 6 x 50-metre free team relay.

He swum a strong race and achieved third place in the 100m free with a five-second personal best of 56.82. Both his relay events saw the team win gold, with Ned swimming equally fast times of 25.69 and 25.42.

It was an amazing experience for the teenager and he hopes he can help Yorkshire retain their prestigious title next year.

Meanwhile, Addingham's City of Bradford Swimming Club newcomer Hermione Roe struck gold seven times in the Yorkshire Swimming Association’s Winter Championships at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds.

The youngster’s top performance came in the 50 metres breaststroke, where she recorded a winning time of 35.09sec in what the club believe to be one of the fastest ever swims for an 11-year-old girl.

Hermione took six other county titles – the 50m and 100m freestyle, 50m and 100m butterfly, 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke.

She also won silver in the 50m backstroke and bronze in the 100m backstroke.
