RUNNERS kicked off 2017 with a bracing chill wind to cool sore party heads in the Silsden New Year’s Day Resolution Fun Run.

In spite of the chill and the “morning after the night before” syndrome, 57 determined souls gathered for this yearly tradition. As ever, fancy dress abounded with everything from pyjamas to princesses and rock stars of yesteryear

Continuing the themes of longevity and tradition, event creator Paul Buckley, and run favourite Pete Metcalfe, completed their 33rd run to maintain their 100 per cent participation in this event.

Fifteen-year-old Logan Hargreaves-Madhas completed his 13th consecutive run. Last but not least, birthday boy Benji Grundy again celebrated in style with a run.

Last year’s race winner Dave Kirkham was unable to defend his title as he was at home suffering the double whammy of flu and laryngitis.

Sutton’s Ian Willis won the race, which is approximately three miles, in 18min 41sec, snatching victory from second man and first under-17 boy, Steeton’s Will Thompson (18:46).

The record time of 15.25, set by David Throup, many years ago remains unbroken. The third man was Martin Hartley (19.16).

Kildwick’s under-14 duo of Lilli Carr (21:10) and Lucy Fryers (21.17) were the first and second ladies finishers. The third lady was Silsden’s Louisa Pickles (22:04).

As is now expected, the presentation and post-race festivities took place in the Sunnybank Social Club. All competitors received a certificate and a prize, to be chosen at random as their name was called.

As is usual, the monies raised will be donated to a worthy cause. This year £175 is to be donated to Ryan’s Wish to Walk. Ryan is four years old and has Cerebral Palsy. All monies raised by the campaign are to fund his life-giving SDR surgery.
