WHINNYGILL Reservoir at Skipton is continuing to provide some excellent sport due to the warm weather conditions and some very good catches of almost all the species in the water have been recorded recently with probably the exception of brown trout.

Quality roach have been feeding well along with decent size bream, tench, and crucian carp.

Perch have tended to be on the small side and rudd have not been turning up all that often although not many have been introduced. One or two anglers have been broken by large fish setting off like an express train and the weed is taking its toll on smaller fish.

The last sunset series match followed the same pattern as earlier matches with a fall off in sport compared to pleasure anglers.

The weights soon tailed off which helped Russell Heaton consolidate his position at the top of the league.

The results of the fourth match were: 1 Kenny Wright 1010g,; 2 Russell Heaton 780g, 3 Malcolm Mawson 200g and Graeme Waterfall 40g.

With two matches remaining to be fished on the 1st and 15th of August, the leading anglers are as follows: 4 Russell Heaton 68 points, 5 William Raymond-Barker 50, Graeme Waterfall 50, Simon Chenier 50; and 6 Kenny Wright 44.

The bait angler is achieving the best sport at Embsay Reservoir where the worm is accounting for some good trout and plenty of smallish perch.

Fly fishermen have had to take a back seat for once and are not catching many trout but are getting amongst the perch. A restocking is likely to take place some time in August which will boost the fishing for all anglers.

On the River Aire the level has not been affected more than a few centimetres during the recent thundery downpours and weed continues to be a problem on some of the shallower stretches. Downstream of Inghey Bridge some good trout have been brought to the net together with the odd chub to 450g.

Summer League results at Snaygill: 1 Terry Bolland 2,040g, 2 Danny Bolland 1,320g, 3 Dave Fenn 1,280g, 4 Ernie Ramsbotham 980g.

Leading positions: 1 Andrew Wharton 26pts, 2 Russell Heaton 27, 3 Dave Fenn 32, 4 Terry Bolland 40, 5 Kenny Wright and Bill Davenport 46.

The next match is this Sunday on the Broughton Road length of the canal.
