UPPER Wharfedale have won the Theakston Nidderdale League T20 Wath Cup after a convincing eight-wicket win over Arthington in Sunday’s final at Newby Hall.

Arthington, who are fighting for promotion from the league above their rivals, elected to bat first.

Joe Metcalfe and Kyran Clarke opened the bowling and each showed pace and control in the first ten overs. Thy were rewarded with one wicket apiece

A near faultless fielding display, full of energy, meant runs were difficult to come by and any wicket chances were taken with one particularly smart catch from youngster Toby Jeffery and an excellent run out by Clarke.

The experienced duo of John Metcalfe and Jon Slater picked up wickets as the pressure of trying to post a competitive total began to tell. Arthington finished on a below par 80-8.

Upper Wharfedale knew patience was the key to their batting display and openers Dave Eggleton (30no) and James Raper (37) controlled the innings with a terrific opening partnership.

Eggleton batted well and was fittingly joined at the crease by captain Joe Daggett as the winning runs were scored in the 16th over.

John Metcalfe was named man of the match for his devastating bowling spell of 4-17.

It caps a terrific transformation in fortunes for Upper Wharfedale over the last 12 months since the move to the Nidderdale League.
