Keighley Albion u-11s 28 Newsome Panthers u-11s 28

AFTER two straight defeats, Albion played out an exciting game against the best team they have faced this year.

Agonisingly, they could not hold out for a win but can be satisfied with a creditable draw.

An error close to Keighley's line led to the visitors hitting the front. This galvanised Albion and, after some sweet passing down the right, Riley Corby dummied and slalomed his way through the line for Caleb McConville to convert.

The hosts' positional switches and strategy to move the ball wide to the big runners was proving fruitful. A big hit from Lewis Bloodworth forced the ball free and Tyler Moyles nipped in to intercept and sprint clear to score, Josh Dickerson adding the conversion.

Newsome came straight back with a try out wide but, straight from the kick off, McConville blasted through the middle before outsprinting the cover to score and give the hosts a half-time lead.

A a stray pass allowed Newsome to intercept and tie the scores in the second half. However, centre Ben McParland got on the outside before sprinting clear, allowing Dickerson to convert, before more enterprising play saw Bloodworth score almost a carbon copy of McParland’s try, this time out of dummy half.

Albion should have put the game to bed but errors allowed Newsome to level again but Albion could be proud of a great effort. Opposition and coaches' awards went to Corby, with Moyles and McParland taking the players' player and parents award respectively.

Albion head into the Bank Holiday break in a healthy fourth place, with four wins out of five and games in hand.

They were resilient in their latest victory without quite producing their best form.

In the first half there was little sign of the frustration to come as tries from Charlie Heath (2), Josh Charnock and Jack Watson gave them a 22-6 interval lead. However, Albion went into the last ten minutes with only a six-point advantage.

They were indebted to Heath, who completed his hat-trick two minutes from time – each try a glorious run from deep in his own half – and in the process notched 20 points. He won two of the match awards, with the others going to Jack Watson and Will Hartley.

Keighley Albion u-8s 28 Heworth u-8s 28

Albion produced a brilliant second-half performance to come back from 16-8 down at the break to draw against a very good side.

Benjamin Horsfield opened the scoring for Albion before Heworth went ahead with three tries. Hamza Butt scored for Albion but Heworth notched again before the break.

An Alfie McGrace try put Keighley back in it, only for Heworth to make it 28-16. However, tries from Aaron Horner and Butt plus a brilliant touchdown from Lucas Aydon-Butler secured a draw.
