West Bowling B u-11s 10 Keighley Albion u-11s 34

Albion played their best rugby of the year against an improved West Bowling outfit to record a thumping victory.

Caleb McConville took Josh Dickerson’s cut-out pass before slaloming over to put them ahead and he also converted. The hosts drew level but enterprising play saw James Sabin released and, despite his 30-yard run being halted just short of the line, Lewis Bloodworth dotted down straight after from acting half.

They increased the lead when Reece Smollen showed and dummied to go clear under the sticks, allowing McConville a simple conversion before Bowling replied with a fortuitous try before the break.

In the second half Albion were made to defend back-to-back sets on their line, a bone-crunching tackle from Ben McParland illustrating their resolve. Another breakout saw Sabin hauled down just short of the line but two plays later Bloodworth was in again from acting half, with Dickerson converting. After a series of offloads, McParland dummied and went under the sticks, with McConville converting.

An injury to Bloodworth saw McParland come into play at acting half and he put the icing on the cake with a powerful, pacy effort from past half way, again allowing McConville a simple conversion.

There was still time for Henry Thirkhill to make a busting run through much of the opposition.

Award winners were: opposition’s pick – Bloodworth, coaches award – Smollen, parents – Zack Bailey, players – Thirkhill.

Stanningley u-13s 28 Keighley Albion u-13s 8

Albion were fresh from a midweek win over Lock Lane but failed to impress at improving bottom club Stanningley.

A solid opening gave little indication of the punishment to come, when the visiting defence was opened up too easily to allow three converted tries in a five-minute spell.

Albion matched their hosts in the second half but made too many errors to threaten a serious comeback.

They did, however, have two excellent individual tries to celebrate. Joel Livock’s feint created space for him to run through unopposed and Will Hartley got over the line despite the close attention of several defenders.

In a game they will largely prefer to forget, match awards went to Livock, Ben Shaw, Callum Smith and Aaron Mitchell.

Keighley Albion u-12s 24 New Earswick u-12s 4

Albion got off to a good start through a Phil Sabin try before New Earswick responded. Solid defensive work from Lewis Reynoldson held the score until

15 minutes into an impressive debut for Joel Oxford, who showed great pace and power to take Albion into a 10-4 lead at half-time.

A solid second-half performance started with good hands from Joe Walsh leading to Josh Catton dummying his way over. Reynoldson converted his second of the game.

Seth Benn scored a 30-metre try moments later after a superb offload from Sabin. Full back Marcus Scargill worked tirelessly, returning the ball in the face of questionable tackles.

Sabin completed the scoring in the final few minutes, taking four players over the line with him.

Awards: Parents – Joel Oxford, 100 per-cent effort – Joe Walsh, Top Tackler – Lewis Reynoldson, Coaches – Phil Sabin, Opposition – Josh Catton.
