King Cross Park u-12s 12 Keighley Albion u-12s 6

ALBION came back down to earth with a bump following the previous week’s crushing victory as a well-drilled King Cross outfit took the spoils.

Starting down the hill on a tight pitch, Keighley created two early opportunities, with Riley Corby to the fore, but coughed up possession. King Cross had a high set completion which gave them territorial advantage due to Albion’s high error count.

The visitors' defence was resolute and it came as no surprise when the first try from the hosts came after a grubber kick through.

Albion were still having trouble making inroads and the hosts were in again when some weak defence allowed a Park winger to canter down the outside to score under the sticks.

Albion thought they were in on the stroke of half-time when Billy Lee cantered down the left wing, but great scrambling defence stopped him just short.

Keighley's pressure told after the break when a smart chip from Olly MacNab saw Caleb McConville plant the ball down. He also added a fantastic conversion.

Albion created further opportunities, with Tyler Moyles and Ben McParland making significant charges, but a spilled ball over the try line and wrong decisions meant they were unable to peg back the hosts.

Albion’s execution let them down as they created many more try-scoring chances but were unable to convert. McParland was awarded the opposition’s award for his efforts.

Keighley shrugged off the shock of going behind early to turn in a five-try performance.

Ciaran Bartlett, Will Hartley and Nathan Dickinson scored in the first half but Normanton pegged them back to 16-10 at the interval.

Playing confident, free-flowing rugby, tries by Edward Croft and Ben Shaw extended their lead, which would have been greater had Hartley twice not been held up by a hard-working defence when over the line.

Normanton’s two late tries could make no difference to the outcome and match awards went to Croft, Harley Robertshaw and Dickinson.

Silsden were slow out of the blocks, which allowed the home team to fire in quick tries.

Soft tackling and poor handling gave the opposition room to punish the Cobbydalers, leaving them with a mountain to climb in the second half.

They came out firing after the interval, with some devastating runs from Joe Beck, Jack Stephenson, Joe Priestley and Ellis Sands. The defence stepped up a gear too, with Jake Bartlam, Jacob Haigh, Callum Mckay, Oliver Moran and newcomer Tommy Conway working hard.

Awards: Tommy Conway - top tackler for his efforts in his first game; Callum McKay - player of the week for his continued efforts to improve his part in the team; Joe Beck - supporters' player and magic moment for a length-of-the-field try and continuously causing havoc with ball in hand; Jack Beck - man of the match for his efforts at hooker, which saw leave the opposition standing; Robson Weir - opposition man of the match in his first game back after injury, showing a continuous threat in attack.
