Harlequins tickled pink after rare victory
10:38am Thursday 2nd February 2012 in Rugby League
Cowling Harlequins in their new strip
Cowling Harlequins 34 King Cross Park A 20
This game was always billed as a must win for the Harlequins and with their new pink kit they played like a different team .
Cowling were completing their sets in attack while the defence held King Cross at bay.
They also benefited from a good start with powerhouse Nathan Brown cutting through the defence to score a try.
Liam Kelly added the conversion before King Cross hit back to level the scores.
The setback didn’t trouble Quins who retook the lead when captain Simon Burgoyne kicked and raced 50 metres to to get the touchdown.
Kelly missed the kick as yet again King Cross came back The third Quins try came when Dave Gooding scored after a great set play.
Kelly’s conversion was a further boost to a Quins side suddenly playing with confidence.
Again Kings cross fired back to reduce the deficit to 16-14 at the break.
The Quins knew that victory was in reach provided they kept calm and held their nerve.
Cowling did and hit their opponents with two brilliant tries.
Brown powered in from 50 metres and Kelly goalled before Craig Nicholson was sent racing through a gap in the defence created by Chris Thompson’s good work.
Kelly crowned his fine individual performance by putting Ali Feather in for the try which put the seal on their victory.
The Quins now have the much -needed confidence to take on local rivals Wyke A away on Saturday but they will have to play smart and not get too confident against well-drilled opponents.
