WHARFEDALE will go into tonight’s Yorkshire Cup final against Harrogate at West Park Leeds (7.30) in good heart.

The 12th-placed Greens defeated fourth-in-the-table Hartpury College 29-3 to round off their SSE National One programme last Saturday at The Avenue, and coach Jon Feeley said: “We saved our best performance for the last game of the league season.

“I am proud, but mainly proud for the players as people can watch them for 80 minutes on a Saturday but it is only when you are behind the scenes that you know how much work goes into a season.

“Also we have suffered with injuries and to beat a team like that who are fourth in the table was absolutely brilliant.”

Harrogate finished fourth in National League Two North – the division below Wharfedale – and Feeley admits that the Dalesmen know little about their opponents, other than the fact that they will probably play an expansive game.

It is eight seasons since they last locked horns in a league match but have met twice in the Yorkshire Cup since, with both matches being won by Wharfedale, the last at Claro Road in 2009.

The Greens have gone with the nucleus of the side which played so well against Hartpury, with the addition of England under-19 winger Taylor Prell, lock Alex Powell and hooker Jake Parkinson, who replaces the injured Ian Larkin.

The Greens are the holders of the cup and will be determined to retain it as it was set out as one of their objectives at the start of the season.
