British & Irish Cup quarter-final: Yorkshire Carnegie 50 Moseley 3

FRED Burdon put an 18-month injury nightmare behind him to help Yorkshire Carnegie book a last-four clash at home to Jersey next Sunday.

The 26-year-old centre played in Yorkshire Carnegie's first game after their name change down at Gloucester in a pre-season friendly but a torn Achilles wrecked his season, and just as he was about to return to fitness last spring, he suffered a torn Achilles on the other leg.

After a long road to recovery, Burdon came off the bench against Moseley, making Chris Walker's second try, and said: "It felt awesome, I couldn't have asked for a better day.

"The lads played really well and everyone has been so welcoming in getting me back in and I really enjoyed it.

"A year ago, playing rugby at Headingley Carnegie did seem a long way off but a lot of people have helped me, such as Jon Power, Steve Humphries and the conditioners, Shane Carney, Ryan Clayton and Blackie (Chris Black)."

Carnegie head coach Bryan Redpath was delighted with his side's win, but said: "It was tough for Moseley. They picked up a few bumps against us the previous weekend in the league and had to put some of their coaching staff on the bench.

"The first 20 minutes were outstanding from them and we had to defend a lot and didn't execute very well in the first half, but when we got our noses in front we had a little bit too much for them.

"I was delighted with the boys in the second half – certainly that last 60 minutes. From then on we were pretty comfortable and just had to make sure we stuck to the simple things, and what was pleasing was that we scored some simple tries and didn't over complicate it."

Tries came from England under-20 international full back Taylor Prell (2), centre Andy Forsyth (2), flanker Walker (2), scrum half Chris Pilgrim and winger Ollie Goss (from halfway), conversions coming from Joel Hodgson (3) and Harry Leonard (2).
