IT is not only the publication of the fixtures for next season that has set the pulses racing as Wharfedale prepare for live in National League two North.

The Greens also had a highly successful club meeting last Friday in the clubhouse.

The business of the evening may have only been short and sharp – "it lasted 45 minutes to one hour," said rugby chairman Michael Harrison – but it was definitely sweet.

"Members of the Cavalry Club, sponsors, including main sponsors, players, prospective players and officials all mingled, and there were about 100 present in all," added Harrison.

"Club chairman David Baker made a speech and then James Doherty (director of rugby) spoke passionately for what must have been half an hour.

"His message was to play adventurous rugby and enjoyment – in fact to carry on how we played at the end of last season."

After the speeches, food was available, and the bar was open all evening as the assembled throng rallied to the Dalesmen's cause.

In terms of concrete signings, there is nothing at the moment to add to the initial signing of Wharfedale old boy Tom Barrett, but Harrison said: "I am optimistic as to how we will go next season.

"Referees who come to the club tell me that there is a drop in standards from Level Three (National League One, where Wharfedale had been for 20 seasons until their relegation at the end of last season) to Level Four, but with us not being involved in that division for so long, I want to reserve judgment.

"However, I don't mind being put on the spot after our pre-season friendlies and our initial three or four league games!"

As for potential new recruits, he did admit: "There are a couple of backs who used to play for us who are thinking of coming back.

"The half-backs seem to be sealed and we will be strong in the back five but we are still in need of props."

Wharfedale have confirmed that pre-season training will start on Tuesday, July 5 (7pm), and will continue at the same time each Thursday and Tuesday thereafter.
