JAMES Doherty reckons that some of the Wharfedale new boys will know a bit more about The Avenue roar after their 38-32 home victory over South Leicester last Saturday.

"The crowd were great," said the Greens' director of coaching, "and a few of the lads won't have experienced that before.

"There is nothing like it, and it is good to stand in the tunnel afterwards sometimes and listen to it."

Doherty added: "Maybe the fans understood our desperation to win after the disappointing loss at Tynedale, and it was our way of saying sorry to those who had travelled up there to watch us.

"The most pleasing thing was that we proved we had some fight and some character, and hopefully Tynedale was just a blip."

Wharfedale were set on their way by a first-minute try by flanker Lewis Wilson, and Doherty said: "That shows ambition, and it is not the first time that we have done it at home this season as we also did it against Hinckley.

"A lot of sides would kick the ball when they receive it from the kick-off inside their 22 but they had three or four players back and we were able to pick some holes in their defence, and that passage of play was outstanding."

The Greens added tries by prop Ian Larkin, wingers Ollie Cicognini and Ralph Wellock, full back Robbie Davidson and No 8 Josh Burridge, and Doherty added: "It was not a perfect performance but it was a lot better than Tynedale."

Their second victory of the season lifted Wharfedale one place to 11th, above Otley, but the Greens, while scoring an average of 27 points per game, are conceding an average of almost 32.

Doherty said: "I don't want us to be a side that wins because we score five tries to their four or six tries to their five.

"I don't want us to be like the Brazilian football team in that sense or to win by basketball scores, but we are playing a high-risk, high-reward game, and we might lose the ball in our 22, and our set-piece, although getting better, is not perfect, but we are a work in progress."

Wharfedale travel to Herefordshire to face sixth-placed Luctonians on Saturday, and Doherty added: "They are a tough side to beat at home on what is a very open pitch."

The Kingsland-based club have lost at home to Stourbridge (fifth) this season but have beaten bottom club Harrogate.
