Wharfedale 28 South Leicester 25

WHARFEDALE just edged a hard-fought and entertaining match to record their first National League Two North home win of the season.

South Leicester took an early lead with a penalty kick and a drop goal from Rickie Aley before Tom Barrett put Dale on the scoreboard with a penalty.

The Greens went ahead after forcing a turnover. They worked the ball left to Oli Cicognini who showed a combination of strength and speed to score an unconverted try.

The South Leicester forwards then drove over for an unconverted try, awarded to Daniel Ireland,to retake the lead.

Back came Wharfedale and good work from Kieran Frost set up Cicognini for his second try. Barrett’s conversion made it 15-11.

South Leicester secured a half-time lead when Daniel Ireland intercepted a pass on halfway before running under the posts to score a try which Aley converted.

The Dale forwards then set up Adam Howard at the start of the second half for a converted try.

Patrick Marks responded for South and Aley’s conversion took the score to 25-22.

However, two penalties from Barrett were enough for Wharfedale to secure a welcome home victory.
