Burley 10 Skipton 34

A HAT-TRICK of tries from winger Josh Smith ensured a convincing away win for Skipton in the first round of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy.

The home side opened the scoring with a penalty but this was soon countered with Smith's opening try of the game, ably converted by new signing Carl Patterson, to put the visitors 7-3 ahead.

Patterson then secured a penalty for the visitors but Burley replied with a converted try of their own to level the score at half-time.

Within a minute of the re-start Smith ran half the length of the field to go over in the corner for his second try, again converted by Patterson.

No. 8 Ben Hall then crashed over with a characteristic forward's try to establish a 22-8 lead for Skipton. Smith stretched the visitors lead with his hat-trick try and a second high tackle on the elusive winger earned Burley a yellow card.

The final try of the game came from the visitors' 17-year-old debutant, Jamie Barker, once again converted by the sure boot of Patterson to give a full-time score of 34-10 to Skipton.
