Dales delight for Ian McGeechan
Leeds Carnegie’s executive chairman Sir Ian McGeechan is delighted that his club are heading to Wharfedale for their latest ‘On the Road’ fixture on Sunday against Moseley in the RFU Championship.
The Yorkshire rugby legend says he is looking forward to catching up with his life-long friend and fellow British Lions tourist John Spencer, and hopes that Leeds Carnegie can build on their win over London Scottish last weekend.
Looking ahead to the game, McGeechan said: “North Yorkshire is a hotbed for rugby union and the people up there are as passionate about their sport as anyone in the country.
“We have been working hard to develop our links with Wharfedale, especially with our former player Tommy McGee in charge there now and Rob Baldwin, the Wharfedale captain, having joined us this season.
“I played alongside John Spencer for many years at Headingley, and obviously he is heavily involved at Wharfedale now.”
McGeechan recalled: “I remember playing up there as a colt and we used to get changed in a pub in Grassington and then drive up to play the game but I recall playing a game there years later to mark the opening of the new clubhouse, so I am looking forward to going back there on Sunday!.”
Leeds Carnegie broke into the top four on Saturday with their win at London Scottish, and McGeechan is delighted with the progress the young team are making.
He added: “We played some good stuff at Scottish and I was pleased for the players and coaches that we finally got an away win.
“We need to start building on the good parts of our game as that could make a significant difference to how we come through this important middle part of the season and where we end up.”
