Wharfedale Foresters 85, Malton & Norton Seconds 8

The Foresters, who thus secured the Yorkshire second teams' championship title for the sixth time in seven seasons, ran out comfortable winners against a spirited Malton side who had recorded their only win the previous Saturday against Hull Ionians.

The Foresters pack again set up the basis of the victory with dominance in the set-pieces, putting the visitors under pressure in the scrums.

Also Tom Whyte won good line-out ball throughout, and the extra pace of the backs and good handling stretched Malton and Norton’s defensive line to keep the score- board ticking over.

It was also an opportunity for the Greens to give some of their colts a run-out, with Jack Hurst having a good game at prop, while behind the scrum James Otulakowski’s pace and elusive running created problems throughout, and he was well supported by Ben Booth and James Harden.

The opening points came virtually from the kick-off, Chris Howick collecting the ball and running strongly upfield to burst several tackles and set up the supporting Rob Rekis to score.

Sam Stockdale helped put Russ Aldersley in for the second score before Ian Larkin broke clear to score the third.

Otulakowski then drew the last line of defence to put Ben Parkinson over, and James Druce profited from a Rekis break for another try.

Howick, Adam Mason, Simon Borrill, Tom Baines and Matthew Jackson all lent themselves to depleted Mal-ton’s cause, and further tries followed for Aldersley, Rhys Davies and Otulakowski before the break, with the Greens 59-5 ahead.

Second-half tries went to Whyte, Druce, Aldersley and Larkin.
