Defeat at Southend, by 33-24, coupled with good results for Westcombe Park (34-19 against Launceston) and Blaydon (two bonus points in a narrow loss at Cinderford) piles pressure on Wharfedale as they prepare for their final league match, at home to Cinderford, on Saturday.
Park, now six points behind with two games left, have tough-looking away fixtures at Blackheath and Cinderford to come, but are in a rich vein of form.
Blaydon are now just four points adrift of Wharfedale, and have a home match with Waterloo, followed by a trip to Stourbridge.
The arithmetic means that a win - of any sort - next Saturday would, barring an accident of scoring by Westcombe Park, see the Greens safe. Anything less, and their fate would no longer be in their own hands.
There was an agonising finale to last Saturday’s match, with the Dalesmen losing out on a bonus point in the last minute when Southend winger Andy Frost landed his fourth penalty. With the forthcoming RFU cuts the Wharfedale club has been working hard to maintain and sustain what they have at the club.
The new plans include a multi-level fund-raising initiative, which has already received a number of commitments. The initiative has been named by the club as the Cavalry Club.
Details of this can be supplied to interested parties by post or by e-mail. If you are interested in helping the club contact Michael Harrison on 01756 752777; Terry Bell on 01756 752657 / 07748 632 655/info@wharfedalerufc.co.uk or Andy Gould on 07956 996107. On Sunday the club are holding a memorial game for Graham Currier, the past club chairman.
The over-35s will be looking to give the under- 25s another beating following up their fine performance of last year. The game will kick-off at 2pm.
This game comes the day after the final league game so hopefully the players will be able to use it as some sort of celebration at the same time as remembering Graham.
