Greens set to face Boro in Yorkshire Cup

After their excellent win over Harrogate in the first round of the Yorkshire Cup Wharfedale’s reward is another away tie, at Middlesbrough for the second year in succession.

After the withdrawal of Rotherham and the shock defeat of Leeds Academy by Middlesbrough in the previous round, Wharfedale are the highest-ranked club left in the competition.

In last season’s tie, Middlesbrough fielded their full first XV and beat the Foresters side put out by Wharfedale by a single point, only then to withdraw from the competition rather than suffer the inconvenience of travelling to Sheffield Tigers in the next round.

The fixture against Middlesbrough has to be played on or before Saturday, February 6, a blank league weekend.

The Foresters had a great 14-12 mid-week win over a Rotherham side featuring several first-teamers and the odd international.

Try scorers for the Greens were Phil Woodhead and Dave Hall, both in the second-half, with two conversions from Will Bell, the second from the touch line.

This was a fantastic performance from the whole side and sees the Foresters retain their 100 per cent record.

On Saturday Wharfedale travel to Cambridge, who lie one place above the Greens in third place in the National One table.

Both sides have won eight games out of 12 but Cambridge have one fewer defeat having drawn one of their games.

The sides have similar defensive records but Wharfedale have racked up 45 points more than Cambridge have.

Wharfedale may have Richard Rhodes back after missing last Saturday’s game against Sedgley Park in which he was replaced at the last minute by Oliver Renton.
