Bad weather victims Thornton drop to second
The fine weather which arrived late on Saturday morning was not in time to save half of the scheduled Craven & District Cricket League games.
However in the games that were played there some excellent performances which helped justify the efforts of groundsmen to get wickets playable, although some were the proverbial minefield.
Many teams didn't have the luxury of even trying to prepare wickets following the amount of water that fell during the week.
p Leaders of Division One, Thornton, were victims of the weather when their game at Bradley was called off. They drop to second spot, on run rate, as Cullingworth go top. They were at Glusburn and Gareth Marshall hit a superb 102no and Chris Welch made 46 as they rattled up 236-4 in their overs. The Park Field side were knocked over for 119 in reply with Dave Hall taking 4-22 and Marshall rounding off a good day with 4-36.
Crossflatts also drop a place after they came a cropper at home to Embsay. The Shires Lane side were indebted to a fighting knock of 81 by skipper Simon Bailey as they made 154-8 in their overs. Next highest scorer was extras with 21 as R Ayub claimed 4-26. Flatts replied with 130 with Mick Brooksbank making 32 and extras 22. In the bowling department Stephen Speak claimed 7-39 and Bailey 3-33.
One of the minefields was down at Sandy Lane where visitors Cowling won the toss and decided to bat. They spent 41.5 overs struggling to 55 as I Hussain took 6-28, J Roper 2-13 and Paul Noble 2-9. The Greenwood Park side faired even worse as they spent 19.2 overs making 41, and this after being 21-8. Steve Richardson took 7-13 and Martyn Dalby 3-19.
p In Division Two second placed Airedale missed out on the chance to close the gap on inactive leaders Barrowford. They lost by 116 runs at Long Lee.
p In Division Three Skipton CI recorded a comprehensive victory over Cowling at Keighley Road. John Stuttard 6-21 and John Drake 4-19 had the home side back in the hut for 46. Ian Burke made 32no as the Sandylands side romped home by nine wickets.
This keeps them in second spot just a point behind Wilsden who saw off the challenge of Barrowford II at Windy Grove.
p In Division Four Haworth Road II are the sole leaders after they saw off Sandy Lane II and Long Lee II didn't play at Haworth II.
p The top three in Division Five were all in action and all were victorious. Leaders Haworth WE II and second placed Cullingworth II won, while Pendle Forest III were dismissed for 65 over at third placed Chatburn II with skipper Chris Mulhern taking 5-21. Mark Holmes 38no and John Moore 20no took the Ribble Valley side to a nine-wicket triumph.
The Executive Committee of the Craven League held a meeting last week to decide how to deal with the uncertainty of getting Wynn and Cowling cup matches played and keeping the schedule on track without devaluing the competitions.
After much debate it was agreed that in view of the weather problems anticipated at the weekend, ties would have to be completed by July 27. The semi-finals would be put back to Sunday, July 29, when games in both competitions would be staged.
The league also want to support Oakworth in the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions competition. Their game against South Yorkshire League champions Treeton would played on either the July 15 or 22. The organisers of that competition had extended the date when matches had to be played.
Having made and conveyed the decision to all clubs remaining in the competitions it was a near certainty that the weather would change! Whilst still showery the weather allowed play in most of the games albeit on soft wickets.
p In the Wynn Cup holders Oakworth were anxious to get the third round game out of the way. Visitors Pendle Forest, who had been very patient and cooperative to the League's support of the Black Sheep, batted first and made 104 with Jason Bracewell top scoring with 30 as Michael Scarborough finished with 4-13 off 9.5 overs. The Cure Hill side had to work hard to get home by 6 wickets.
Possible favourites, on current form, Cullingworth made the short journey to Ingrow and restricted the home side to 121 with Dale Hoyle scoring 32 and Adie Parker 25. Chris Welch took 5-28 as the innings closed at the end of the 36th over. The visitors were indebted to a fine knock of 71no by Steve Welch which ensured their place in the semi finals, with victory by 5 wickets being achieved in the 41st over.
The most exciting and dramatic finish came over at Chatburn. Thornton had switched the tie from Booth Bridge Lane because of the annual village fate being held on their ground. The Ribble Valley side were knocked over for a modest 90 with Mark Paxton taking 4-16 and Anwar 3-22. Thornton were made to work very hard for their reward with 42 by skipper Jason Lockley keeping them in the game - just! The 9th wicket fell with the score on 83 but Marc Laycock and Danny Ibbotson spared their blushes as they crept home.
p In the Cowling Cup holders Oakworth II travelled to Sandy Lane II and won by 7 wickets.
Ingrow II trip to Cononley II proved to be fruitful as they triumphed by 47 runs. The Keighley side made 163 with Nick Hoyle making 45 as Peter Nelson took 3-17 and Freddy Osadzenko 3-57. The homeside were dismissed for 116 with Wayne Coppack bowling well to take 6-27 and T Hodgson 3-29.
The other two ties, Long Lee II v Cullingworth II and Barrowford II v Haworth Road II will be played on Sunday, July 15.

The Headline is misleading. If you look at the table you will see that Thornton and Cullingworth have had an equal number of games rained off..
One against Thornton and one against bottom of the table Sandy Lane who have not won a game and turned up with 10 men. The table is therefore now evened out and Thornton and Cullingworth are on a level playing field with Crossflatts close behind....

In the text I see that Thornton are second on run rate. so headline must be correct. How do they compare?
