Settle seconds into Lawrenson Cup semis
Settle's second team secured a comprehensive victory over Edenfield in their much-postponed quarter-final clash at the Marshfield.
Settle seconds cup run has been a positive in what has been a stop-start season at the club.
Although the second team have had a good cup run, Settle CC chairman Malcolm Dodgson said that the first team have had four of their last five matches abandoned because of the weather.
And he said that three out of four matches of those matches were against teams near the bottom of the table.
"The first team have the ambition to get into the top half of the table but it's been such a stop-start season which makes it very frustrating for the players. People get so used to not playing that it's almost like it's the beginning of the season."
Dodgson said Settle have been unlucky to get matches played on rain-soaked pitches. In total they have had five matches abandoned, two more than the next nearest team.
"We're not a county cricket ground, and you can only get so much water off the surface."
The fact that Settle's Lawrenson Cup quarter-final match took place at all was a tribute to the umpires and skippers who agreed to carry on playing through a mixture of light drizzle and heavy showers.
With a strong bowling attack, Settle put the visitors in to bat and restricted them to two runs an over for most of the game. Seamers John Tarbox, Mark Glover and Matthew Wildman kept things very tight and picked up wickets, but most damage was done by the left-arm spin of John Hughes who took 4-25 from his ten overs.
A few catches were spilled, but Tarbox, Nick Cokell and Paul Taylor all held the ones they were offered.
Taylor, who had not bowled for some years, hit the stumps twice to finish off the Edenfield innings, leaving them on 114 all out.
Taylor was then the star of the Settle innings, hitting a commanding and entertaining 78 not out at a run a ball in deteriorating conditions.
He was well supported by Neil Heseltine (27 no) while the rest of the team stayed dry under the clubhouse awnings and relished the ten-wicket victory.
Settle march on to meet Ribblesdale Wanderers at Church Meadow in the semi-finals this Sunday.
The weather continues to play havoc with the Ribblesdale League's cup programmes.
In the Ramsbottom Cup, Whalley and Cherry Tree are through to the semi-finals whilst Barnoldswick and Baxenden and Blackburn Northern and Great Harwood will try again this Sunday.
In the Lawrenson Cup, Settle will play one semi-final on Sunday, whilst Salesbury and Burnley Belvedere and Read and Cherry Tree will play their quarter-finals.
