Settle defeated in Lawrenson Cup final
While the first teams of Settle, Earby and Barnoldswick all had their matches abandoned at the weekend, Settle's second team were in action on Sunday but suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Salesbury in the Lawrenson Cup.
Settle lost by 140 runs and they were set the monumental task of chasing down a massive Salesbury total of 281-4.
Settle got off to a good start when in the second over Thomas Strickland swooped like a hawk at square leg and, with a direct hit at the non-strikers end, ran out the luckless Jason Rawson.
This early promise soon evaporated as Ian Riley made the most of some generous fielding by Settle. In total there were three dropped catches and a missed stumping as the wet conditions and the enormity of the occasion clearly told on the Settle team.
Once Neil Heseltine dropped Riley on 3 it was obvious it was not going to be Settle's day as the opener went on to score 128, a total that earned him the Man-of-the-Match award.
Among the wickets for Settle were Paul Taylor who took 1-26, Joel Dalby with 1-37 and Strickland who took 1-44.
In reply Settle got off to a pedestrian start and were soon 42-3. A decent recovery led Matthew Hellifield's 42 saw Settle take the total to 83-4 After reaching 114-5, the last five wickets fell for 26 in six overs, as Settle closed on 141 all out.
