Barlick get back that winning feeling

IT'S taken a long time, but Barnoldswick finally won a Ribblesdale League game on Saturday.

But, not content with their first win in 21 attempts, they went out and did it all again the following day!

Barlick's problem this season has been their fragile batting, undermined by some indifferent performances from substitute professionals.

So bad are the club's woes with professionals that members are convinced there has been a record number of ducks by the paid men.

But this time they managed to find a professional who was fully worth his pay as Riaz Kaleem hit an unbeaten 97 to set a challenging 221 for five target.

Although Edenfield's pro Baber Naeem even eclipsed Kaleem with 110, Sajid Akhtar took five wickets for 63 as Edenfield came up 14 runs short when their last wicket fell.

Against Oswaldtwistle the hero was David Scothern, who scored 54 in a total of 163 for nine.

They then dug in and skittled out their opponents for 97, with stand-in pro Vernon Kurtzer taking three wickets and Sid Sheraz at the death picking up the last three wickets.

In the Yorkshire derby, Earby opener Dave Watson hit an unbeaten 68 as they cruised past Settle's target of 184 for six with seven wickets to spare.

There was less good news for Earby the following day, as they found title chasing Baxenden far too strong for them. They were dismissed for 96 and Baxenden knocked off the winning runs for the loss of just four wickets.

Settle emerged from the double header weekend without much to cheer as they were beaten by Ribblesdale Wanderers on Sunday to add to their Applegarth upset.

Jeeva Kulatunga was on form with the ball and took five wickets for 28 runs as the Wanderers reached 152.

But wickets fell steadily for Settle and, despite 46 from Kulatunga and 41 from Andy Davidson, they were all out for 143, finished off by a hat-trick by Scuderi, who had carried his bat for 81 in Wanderers' total of 152.
