Aussie pro leads Settle to first win of the season

Settle's first team notched up a welcome first win against arch-rivals Read in the Ribblesdale League on Saturday.

The home side were put in by Settle and opening bowlers David Morrell and Bret Silvey, backed up by Jeff Ellis, kept a tight rein on the scoring.

Michael Whalley managed a half-century for Read but with David Worthington claiming three victims behind the stumps and Ellis and Morrell bagging three wickets apiece, the home side could only muster 132 runs.

In reply Settle started soundly enough but lost four wickets in two dramatic overs.

However, all that was needed was a player to support Silvey (36 not out) and Robbie Preston rose to the occasion plundering a quick-fire 34.

The game had already swung away from Read at Preston's departure, and Adam Gowland partnered the pro to the end.

A clearly delighted Malcolm Dodgson praised an excellent all-round performance and hoped the win would kick-start the season.

The Settle chairman said: "Bret is finding things very different from Perth but showed that he is prepared to knuckle down and make the team's needs his priority. He has a lot of responsibility as both pro and skipper, but I'm sure things will get easier as he gets used to the other lads and their abilities."

Sunday's match against Oswaldtwistle Immanuel was rained off, but not before Matthew Wildman repaid the coach's faith in him as opener by hitting a superb 43 not out, Settle finishing on 88-2.

Barnoldswick won their second game in a row with a two-wicket victory against Clitheroe on Saturday.

Clitheroe put up a solid total of 179-4 behind the batting performances of Neil Bolton (73) and Peter Dibb (57). Both players were evenutally bowled out by Barlick skipper Michael Scothern, who took two for 32.

Scothern was also the top-scoring batsman for Barnoldswick. His 39 not out guided his side past the Clitheroe total with two wickets to spare.

Luke Hodgson and David Scothern had knocks of 31 and 25 respectively.

Barlick's home match against Edenfield on Sunday was abandoned. They play at Whalley this Saturday.

Earby's poor start to the season continued as they lost by six wickets to Cherry Tree on Saturday. Batting first Earby were bowled out for 129.

Opener Stephen Pickles grafted away, scoring 33 off 71 balls. An unamed player scored 47, Adam Yates (12) and Stephen Hipgrave (10) were the others to score in double figures.

In reply Cherry Tree reached their target with six wickets to spare as Zeeshan Pervez, hit 86..

Earby's match at Ribblesdale Wanderers on Sunday was abandoned.

Settle travel to Earby for an intriguing early season derby on Saturday.

After a great start last week, Settle's second team took a knock back with a home defeat to Read. Settle's batting was held together by Steven Howarth who patiently compiled 43 runs from 134 balls. In contrast, James Metcalfe put on a cavalier display, hitting two straight sixes in his entertaining knock of 20.

Settle's total of 107 never really looked enough. Read eased home with four overs and five wickets to spare.
