Junior league announces 2008 fixtures
The Upper Airedale Junior Cricket League has announced its cricket fixtures for 2008.
The proposed schedule will embrace 468 matches, a record for a fifth consecutive year.
Continued acceleration in popularity of the game has led to clubs planning yet more teams as a further 13 seek to get the youngsters involved, which more than off-sets the seven clubs who have lost teams.
For the first time ever each age group will be organised into two divisions as 73 teams set out after UAJCL's five championships.
Fixtures secretary Terry Thompson said: "Despite sadly losing one-team clubs Cononley, Barrowford and Thornton, I wouldn't be surprised given better weather if all age groups set record numbers of matches played."
There is a pleasant outcome for Bradley U-13s who are to gain a third promotion place as Gargarve will not take up the Division One place.
The UAJCL 2008 campaign first draws stumps on St Georges Day, Wednesday, April 23, with a full U-15s programme in the Johnson & Johnson League.
The feature match may well be the meeting of Hargreaves Cup winners, promoted Haworth West End with close neighbours Oxenhope whilst in Division Two the West Craven derby between Earby and Pendle Forest will hold the attention of the Red Rose. League champions Steeton make the trip up the A65 to Settle to start their defence. New club Ingrow open with a visit to Gargrave.
Twenty-four hours later U-11s CartaSport champions Earby take on Oakworth, whilst the Oaks new U-11s B team host the Denholme Devils.
On the Friday Gargrave v Skipton will be a tasty U-11s opener for both teams.
On Sunday, April 27, the Brook Taverner League for U-13s gets into action with the newly re-named Wharfedale Rams popping over the hill to Settle whilst their senior compatriots the Wharfedale Stags host Oxenhope. An intriguing match of the day will perhaps be the meeting of Earby and Skipton. Earby were pipped for both the 2007 league and cup by double-winners Skipton.
Finally on Monday, April 28, the big lads take the field in the Keighley Cup2000 League. Champions Steeton will face cup winners Skipton with the Division Two highlight the Aire Valley derby between Sutton and Glusburn, champions Steeton face fellow Aire-Wharfe side Skipton.
Cup finals were awarded to Oakworth on July 6 (U-13s and U-17s) and to Skipton (U-11s and U-15s) on July 20. The live draws for the Barritt-Stephenson, Hindle, Hargreaves and Spencer Cups will take place on Thursday, March 20.
