Triumphant Skipton are on the up and up
 |
| The Skipton RUFC squad celebrate their second successive promotion which takes them to Yorkshire 1 for the first time in their history. |
SKIPTON Rugby Club is bouncing at the moment. Buoyed by a second successive promotion the Reds thrive on an air of enthusiasm that runs throughout the club.
After a successful promotion campaign in Yorkshire 2 which has brought them to their highest ever playing level the Sandylanders ooze a sense of togetherness and enthusiasm that sees the first team supported at home games by a crowd of around 300.
That makes them the envy of all other clubs at this level and even enviously eyed by their National 2 neighbours up and down the dale.
Club Chairman Richard Mashiter said: "It has been a tremendous season and the success can be put down to the enthusiasm at the club, an enthusiasm that extends not just to the playing of the game but also to our social functions. Saturday's dinner-dance at which the players awards will be made is over-subscribed and all our social events are well supported.
"Over the last two or three years we have really put the club in order with excellent coaches, an excellent spirit, adding quality players who really want to play for our club to the existing squad and having a mission to get better and better."
Showing the forward thinking of the club Mashiter added: "Last year when we got promotion rather we decided that rather than resting on our laurels we would have a go again and go for promotion. I can assure our supporters that we will carry the same attitude in to Yorkshire 1, we will be looking for glory again.
"The facilities at Skipton are excellent, they will enable us to perform at a higher level than we are at the moment.
"We have the right coaching team in head coach Adam Oldfield, fitness coach Paul Lacy and forwards Coach Martin Whitcombe, who in his own playing days was on the fringe of international honours, and the players respond to them."
Mashiter said that it was clear from their first game of the season that Skipton would be aiming high and looking to promotion.
"It has been a thrilling season, after the very first game we were in a promotion place and we never looked back, we were always first or second through-out the season. There is a real buzz about Skipton Rugby Club and it looks as if it will continue for many years as we have a very strong and thriving Junior Section who we will be looking to to feed our senior sides.
"They recently took 160 players on a tour to Wales and playing against teams from all over the UK they returned with three trophies so the future is in good hands," he said.

Interested in your comment about being "enviously eyed by their National 2 neighbours up and down the dale."
Whilst I am pleased to see Skipton doing a fantastic job, as a Wharfedale supporter I am MORE pleased with our own progress, finishing 7th in National League 2 for the first time and reaching the Yorkshire Cup Final for the 3rd year running.
Otley were also promoted to National League 1, and congratulations to them.
It seems that all local clubs are doing well and the subsequent press reporting should read likewise.

Whilst I agree with the comments of the Jolly Green Giant regarding "all the local clubs doing well", I would suggest that the Greens get more than their fair share of the limelight in the media and for once, it is good to see a Red hew to the local paper rather than a green one. It is also very encouraging that the Skipton Mini's & Juniors are also basking in the light and have claimed some trophy's for the Sandylands cabinet this year. The future's bright, the future's Red !!!

Not sure about the colour of the future as I prefer a Green one (!) however it is great to see all the local clubs doing well and Skipton certainly fall into that category.
With regards to the Minis and Juniors, maybe there is chance for a greener hew to reporting in the local press as does appear to be generally red.

It is good to see all the local clubs doing well.
With regard to the Mini's & Junior's reports, it is a case of the parents/coach's of the teams to submit a report to the Herald and Skipton a very keen to get their reports in. Each team has a designated (keen parent)reporter who sends in the reports via e mail whether they win or lose ! Might be worth mentioning it to the Junior section at Wharfedale to get writing !!

The word you are looking for is "Hue".
Hew is a verb as in "hewn out of rock". Hue is a noun, as in a "green or red" hue. So let's have a blue hue to the paper.

Thank you for the correction.
I assume that a) you are a Teacher and b) the Blue Hue is associated with North Ribblesdale, who also fished a creditable 6th place on Yorkshire League 2.
I await your corrections to my assumptions and speelings..

Two promotions in two seasons, up the leagues we go! Well done lads, great effort and let us do the same next year.
There seems to be a distinct lack of congratulations for their efforts on this page and more of the opposition trying to get one up on the Skipton fan by mocking his spelling ability. Pathetic...
C'mon Lads, have a big pre-season and fire into the Yorkshire 1 sides next year!

No, no, no Red Army -you've missed the point completely through not reading the postings correctly.
It's called banter and was to a North Ribblesdale supporter anyway (see posted by details)
I am thrilled for Skipton and stated so quite clearly in my first posting. I am even going to watch a few Skipton home games next season when Wharfedale are away.

When I said "Red Hew" I was referring to my friend from Scotland "Hew" who is a raving Labour supporter and who buys my Herald for me on a Thursday night !! (insert grinning smiley here).
To sum up, we have three great clubs in the Craven area and it doesn't matter if they are green, red or blue, they have all performed very well over the last season and all have excellent mini & junior sections which will provide us with entertaining rugby in the future.

Here here - and lets not forget the COUGARS too who after a long winter of discontent are currently a well deserved 2nd in Division 2.
A veritable feast of Rugby wherever you look, but not as far as Bradford please..ahem.
